Easside Percussion's show at The Black Box in Asbury Park
was great! It's good to see that there are people outside of New York City that are
interested in new and experimental music. We had a great audience and we wish Carlton
Wilkinson luck with the series. Check out the website and support this series. The Black Box
Issue #9 of Fever Pitch Magazine is now out. This
issue includes the drummer profiles for the CD "Just Drums II" which has just been released. This is an incredible
CD with solo drum pieces by more than 30 innovative soloists. The CD includes Jim, Christine Bard, Michael Evans and many more.
Also in this issue is an article by Jim titled "The Well Tuned Drum" a copy of which can be read on the
PERCUSSION BLOG page.
PHASE III, Jim's new band with Christine Bard-drums, Kato Hideki-bass,
Marco Cappelli-guitar, Michael Attias-saxes, will be touring Europe starting on December 5th. Check the Subtone Concerts site for updates
We hope to have a live CD out from our Barbes gig before we leave. We will keep you posted.
On Monday August 23rd, Jim, along with ISSUE PROJECT ROOM, performed Cornelius Cardew's
"The Great Learning" paragraph 2 for the Howl Festival. The performance was a great success with over 40 singers and 11 drummers. Jim
would like to thank all the performers and audience members that participated. The power and beauty of many
great musicians performing together in a field of sound is something that sends out a strong message that speaks
clearly in today's socially and politically awkward climate. We will be doing more performance in mass during the next year!
ITALIAN DOC REMIX performed a the Bowery Poetry Club on Halloween night. We had a great time and a great gig. Look
for more of this band in the spring after Jim returns from Europe.

Hello all, I am back from two months in Europe. Most of the time was spent in Italy. Phase III toured from December
3rd thru December 12th. The tour was a great success and we will be doing a much longer tour next year.
After the tour I rented an apartment in Napoli and wrote music for The Dissonanzen Ensemble. They are a new music ensemble in Napoli. On January 15th
we did a concert where I performed Morton Feldman's "King of Denmark", John Cage's "One4", "Ria" (a new duet that I wrote for Marco Cappelli and myself) and then we performed the commisioned piece with the group.
I thought this music would be a little difficult for this audience but I did some interviews before the concert and explained the history and my process of composition and the audience responded very
well. This kind of cultural exchange is very important and I hope to bring Dissonanzen to New York next year for a concert.
Now that I'm back in New York I will be booking some gigs for "Phase III and IDR so keep an eye on the calendar.

Jim Pugliese's PHASE III
Next European Tour: Nov. 15th thru Nov.27th 2005
Well it's the end of summer and it's been a good one. I got to study Mbira with some of my favorite
players from Zimbabwe. Fraderick and Fungai Mujuru were out in Berkeley CA and I went out for two weeks to study, play and sing
day and night. A very intense and deep experience.
Also, I did a great concert at THE STONE with Christine Bard and Marco Cappelli. We played some of my written
music and experimented with some new material for Phase III.
Just last week we did two nights of Anthony Coleman's music for his
50th birthday celebration. The first night was at Issue Project Room and the second night was at Barbes Brooklyn. Lot's of great
music which spanned the last almost 20 years of Anthony's career.
Coming up is a very special PHASE III gig with Marc Ribot opening up the evening solo and then
sitting in with Phase III at ISSUE PROJECT ROOM on September 15th. Don't miss this one. Marc,
Christine and I go way back to Marc's early 90's band "SHREK" so be prepared. We will also be recording live for a future CD.
On September 22st Marc Ribot and I will be performing as guest with "Brewed By Noon" which includes drummer Sean Noonan, Senegal bassist Thierno Camara and guitarist Jon Madof at BARBES
On October 13th Jenny Lin and myself will be premiering a new duet that I composed for us at Symphony Space Thalia.
On November 11 I will be performing with Zeena Parkins and Christine Bard at I-Beam. More info later.
Finally watch for the fall tour schedule for PHASE III coming soon.
Check the CALENDAR for more info. More Later!

Since I last updated lot's of things have occurred. Phase III did
a very
successful Euro tour. I almost didn't make the first gig. I Was spending some time in Napoli, Italy
before the tour and had my passport stolen. I was then interegated by the American Embassy (they thought
I was a terrorist or something because they claimed I never had a passport???) I Finally made it to
the airport in time for my flight to Dresden for our gig at "Jazz Club Tone" and the Italians decided
to have a transportation strike. After five hours at the airport in Napoli I finally got a flight
out to Munich and barely caught another flight to Dresden. The band had already started the first
tune and I just kind of jumped in and started playing. Turned out to be great fun.
Coming up is a very special PHASE III gig with special guest Marc Ribot
and opening up the show and also playing with Phase III on the second set, our dear friends from
Ghana Nii Tettey Tetteh and the Kusun Ensemble at ISSUE PROJECT ROOM on Saturday February 18th. Don't miss this one.
Phase III Live at Issue Project Room will be out soon so stay tuned.
I will be recording two of my duets in February "RIA" for guitar and percussion and "ENGYM" for piano and percussion. RIA was written for Marco Cappelli and
Engym was written for Jenny Lin.
On February 23rd I leave for Napoli, Italy to take part in a collaboration with artist DM Wilding at
Galleria Overfoto
That's it for now, more soon!

Hi all,
The Big News is that PHASE III's new CD "LIVE AT ISSUE PROJECT ROOM NYC" has officially been released
on the Italian Label IMPROVVISATORE INVOLONTARIO.
I will have samples and reviews up on the site soon meantime you can purchase the CD here in the
States from DOWNTOWN MUSIC GALLERY.
Other news is IDR, (Italian Doc Remix) will be recording our first CD beginning of April. IDR is the result of the artistic
exchange between Marco Cappelli and myself, whose mutual reverence for the ritual music of small southern Italian villages led to
the formation of this band. More on that later...
It's been a great year for recording with my friends and collegues. I have had the honor and pleasure
of recording with "Death Ambient", Anthony Coleman's new release on New World Records and Bobby Previte's "New Bump".
I am continuing my study of Mbira and hope to return to Zimbabwe soon. Pictures and stories from the last trip
will be up soon!
That's it for now, more soon!
